Omega 3 fish oil – BENEFITS
American Heart Association Rapid – 1 August 2016
Daily, for 6 months, patients who have had a heart attack took a dose of Omega 3 fatty acids from fish oil. What has been observed is that heart function has improved and muscle scars have been diminished.
The shape and function of the heart can be altered after a heart attack, a condition known as post-stroke remodeling, which results in heart failure.
Omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil are associated with a higher survival rate for people who have had a heart attack.
A previous study found that Omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil are associated with a higher survival rate for people who have had a heart attack.
In OMEGA-REMODEL, the researchers found that compared to those who took placebo, patients who took a 4-gram dose of omega-3 acid for 6 months had a 5.8% reduction in the systolic volume index at the left ventricle.
“Heart failure is still a major issue after a heart attack, despite all therapies and advances in care,” says Raymond Y. Kwong, lead author of the study, director of magnetic resonance imaging at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts.
“Our findings have shown that omega-3 fatty acids are a safe and effective treatment in improving cardiac remodeling, so it can also be promising in what is heart failure.”
Researchers said these results suggest that omega-3 fatty acids allow the heart to contract better and also reduce unnecessary fibrosis in the area.
Omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties
Researchers have also noticed a reduction in biomarkers for inflammation, suggesting that omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties.
The study involved 360 people who suffered from heart attack, half receiving a high dose of omega-3 fatty acids and half-placebo, starting one month after they underwent myocardial infarction.
Because study participants received high doses of omega-3 in addition to other drugs, they were under close medical observation for any potential side effects that might have occurred.
Treatment with omega-3 has proven to be safe and effective
Both groups received treatment based on instructions issued by the American College of Cardiology Foundation and the American Heart Association. Blood tests were used to confirm that patients in the omega-3 fatty acid group were treated.
Study conclusion
Dosing Omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil daily for 6 months significantly improved heart function and helped reduce the scarring of patients who had a heart attack compared to those taking placebo.
