Methylsulfonylmethane
Applicability and safety details of this supplement
US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health – March 16, 2017
Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) has become a popular food supplement, used for a variety of purposes, even as an anti-inflammatory agent. It has been well investigated in human clinical trials and experiments. As a substance approved by the competent authorities, MSM is well tolerated by most people in doses up to four grams per day with few known side effects. This study provides an overview of MSM with details of its use and its benefits.
Mechanism of action
Due to its increased ability to penetrate the membranes all over the body, the MSM’s mechanical function may involve a collection of cell types and is therefore difficult to elucidate. The results of in vitro and in vivo studies suggest that MSM helps to interlink inflammation and reduce oxidative stress to transcriptional and subcellular levels.
Treatment with supplements that contain MSM has proven to be safe and effective.
MSM has anti-inflammatory properties
MSM can diminish the expression of synthesis of inducible nitric oxide (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) by suppressing NF-κB; thereby diminishing the production of vasodilators, such as nitric oxide (NO) and prostanoids [86]. Thus, MSM maintains vascular tone and regulates mast cell activation; therefore, MSM has an inhibitory role on the mediation of mast cells of inflammation.
MSM keeps free radicals away
Inflammation and oxidative stress are closely linked and are two sides of the same coin. Oxidative stress occurs when free radicals, usually reactive oxides or nitrogen species (RONS), come in contact with parts of the cell, such as proteins, lipids or DNA. These parts of the cells deteriorate and lose their function. Inflammation is a response to a specific cause that causes increased blood flow, increased capillary permeability, and, most importantly, response to white blood cells (or leukocytes). Oxidative stress and inflammation are involved in many chronic diseases, they are inextricably linked because each can be induced by the other.
As the body ages, it loses its ability to fight the effects of free radicals. Free radicals, along with oxidative stress, result in degenerative processes and premature aging.
Various studies and theories have shown that oxidative stress and free radicals are the cause of many diseases and conditions, such as:
- central nervous system disease, such as Alzheimer’s, dementia;
- cardiovascular diseases due to clogged arteries;
- autoimmune and inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and eye cancer;
- changes in age-related aspects such aș: loss of the skin`s elasticity, wrinkles, hair loss;
- diabetes
- genetic degenerative diseases, such as Huntington’s disease or Parkinson’s disease
MSM reduces the amount of ROS produced by the mitochondria. Independently, MSM can both increase the clearance of free radicals and reduce the amount of free radicals in the body. MSM has similar effects on the inflammatory system.
Administration of MSM supplements has positive effects in inflammatory processes and is a powerful combatant of oxidative stress.
MSM reduces muscle pain associated with exercise
Prolonged exercise can cause muscle pain caused by muscle microtrusion and connective tissue, resulting in a local inflammatory response. MSM is an effective supplement against muscle pain due to its anti-inflammatory effects as well as positive effects on the level of connective tissue.
MSM is useful against joint diseases
Arthritis is an inflammatory condition of the joints that currently affects approximately 58 million adults, with an estimated increase of 78.4 million by 2040. This inflammation is characterized by pain, stiffness, and a reduction in the movement of the joint. MSM is currently the only safe treatment against arthritis and other inflammatory conditions.
MSM as a micronutrient with improved penetration properties is typically integrated with other anti-arthritic agents such as glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate and boswellic acid.
Concluzie studiu
MSM is a popular supplement with a wide variety of uses. Research shows that it can be helpful in reducing joint pain, reducing inflammation, improving skin health, and accelerating recovery after exercise. MSM helps the immune system and can have cancer fighting properties. MSM is a safe and effective supplement, and studies report only minimal side effects.
